Giving your presentation

We don't have much advice to offer here; you should just be yourself and have a good time giving your presentation to all of those faceless people out there in the audience. Other than that, you might want to keep the following goals in mind:

  • Speak clearly, distinctly, and at an appropriate volume.
  • Move along at a good pace.
  • If you're working with slides in your presentation, remember to change them as appropriate.
  • Try to look directly into your camera whenever you can because that will appear to the audience like you are talking directly to each and every one of them.
  • Keep in mind how much time has been allocated in the event program for your presentation. You should try your best to stick to the schedule.

Quick Tip

While you are giving your presentation, you may be surprised to hear someone from the Studio staff talking to you. Don't be alarmed! And try not to react (yes, that will be hard, but try anyway!) The Studio staff can "whisper" to you during your time on the Main Stage, but they won't do so unless they have something really important to say to you — like you have over-run the scheduled duration for your presentation and you need to wrap it up. The audience will not hear what the Studio staff whispers to you, and you should not audibly respond to the whisper. The staff will keep the whisper short so it does not greatly interrupt your thoughts while you are giving your presentation, and they will try to time it so the whisper comes at a moment when you are not actually speaking.

Quick Tip

If you are using slides, like a PowerPoint deck, in your presentation, please do not advance past the final slide in the deck. Just leave the final slide visible. The Studio staff will remove the slide from the Main Stage at an appropriate point.

Quick Tip

You may find it useful to have a "count-down timer" pre-set with the scheduled duration of your presentation. You could then start the timer when you start presenting. As long as you can see the timer during your presentation, you'll always be aware of how you're doing with respect to the schedule.

If you are using a Windows 10 computer, a count-down timer is built in. To access the timer, use the Windows search function to search for "timer". One of the results will be "Alarms & Clock". Or you can just look for the app in the Start window. Launch the application and look for the Timer icon (second from the right) in the ribbon. Click that icon to enter timer mode. Also, be sure to click the three dots in the lower right corner of the window and select "Notification Settings" to turn off notifications — otherwise, the application will make a sound when the timer counts down to zero. If you plan to use the timer during your presentation, be sure to practice using it beforehand so you're comfortable with it.

One more thing... Please be sure to read the Requirements and Tips page of this website before you attend a practice session — and definitely before you give your presentation! You'll find lots of useful information about your computer, your Internet connection, and your audio/video setup.

So...your presentation has ended. Let's discuss what's next.
